Raise A Hallelujah: Jonathan & Melissa Helser
Don’t discount yourself because of your past, He doesn’t.
We’re back with another general! The past two generals had this one commonality. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. It boils down to the “yes” of obedience to living a life that is not their own. Evan and Kathryn ran with the Lord and they did extraordinary things. We can put them on a pedestal, but they were like you or I. Meaning, we can do the stuff because He chooses us.
Our next General was born in Canada, 1870. His name, John G. Lake. This general seems to well known than most. More so the gift to see the sick healed. It’s weird to think that everyday people can lay hands on the sick and see them set free from their diseases. Or is it? The great commission is our empowerment.
“And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”
Matthew 10:7-8 NKJV
John G. Lake started like most. He heard the Lord and gave his life to serve Him all his days. He was a friend to sickness as illness plagued his family. He chose to be different. He didn’t let the past medical history be his future. He was a child of God, and he believed nothing less.
He married his wife, Jennie, and became a wonderful power couple. However, old friend sickness came a knocking. His wife was struck with disease and John would not have it. Every doctor had already condemned Jennie, but John knew different. He knew the great Physician and He had the final say.
After prayer and revelation, God healer Jennie and her healing became news.
In every bad situation, God can use it to make a better future. Jennie’s healing though not given by God, could be used by God. He did just that as her healing launched the Lakes’ into their ministry. From that point, John and Jennie saw many miracles of healing God’s people.
When the enemy sees you achieving greatness and advancing the kingdom of God. He comes to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10) that hope you have. Boy, did he come to a knocking?
John loved his wife, but he also loved the ministry he was doing. It was good, and so John pursued it. To later date, he loved his ministry so much that Jennie took a back seat and when death arose on her John was late to know.
John was not arrogant in the Lord as much as he was confident in believing in what God says in His word.
As sickness rose around John, he could not and would not believe in the power of sickness to be over him. So much so, that under a microscope sickness literally dissolved in front of the microscopic view. It could not stick.
A point made here is that sickness is not from God. Also that the enemy has been defeated. With those thoughts in mind, the next chapter of John G. Lake was the second chance John needed to carry on.
John went on to do great things. Many signs & wonders followed his obedience to Christ. John even later remarried and choose family over the ministry. While his past family, children of Jennie and him, despised John as a father. His new family dynamic set a completely different atmosphere than what his first family experienced.
John finished his story by sickness falling on him. The stroke he just never recovered from on this side of Heaven. John’s life is a testament of what can be done in cooperation with Christ and the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we need that restart or second chance to get things right. Sometimes we need more than a second. He doesn’t look at you any different. He’s just waiting for you to open the conversation and repent.
John also left a legacy to follow. While there weren’t any immediate torch bearers, a man by the name of Cal Pierce took up the mantle today and set in place Healing Rooms where ordinary people are doing extraordinary things. Where I live we have one of the branches of this ministry and it’s changed my life. Every week sick and hurting people come from all over to just receive what Jesus would have for them. We get to do the stuff. Healings, freedoms, hope, etc. it’s all being released through the name of Jesus.
Though I wish I could go into so much more for detail. I’ll cut it off here. To honor your time and encourage you to read more about their story in the book God’s Generals by Roberts Liardon.
Join us next week as we close this series with the man on fire. The one who lead the burning ones into a new movement of partnering with the Holy Spirit.

Hello friends, I’m Marco. I’m an RN, & founder of Four Winds, a ministerial blog.
I have a heart for this generation to know who they are & whose they are. I also contend for revival to cover college campuses. As well as preach the word until every nation has heard. Sharing Jesus with all, & showing the love that was once shown me.
