// ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His word; Just to rest upon His promise; Just to know, Thus saith the Lord. //
’Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus by William J. Kirkpatrick & Louisa M. R. Stead
There’s just something about that name.
We’ve learned about the desire of God’s heart to be near us, Higher. We’ve seen that Jesus is more than willing to be our friend, Down In The Well. Now we’re going to discover how this relates to us. More importantly how this relates to you.
We will be reading from Acts 17: 22- 34. We will be paraphrasing to honor your time. We encourage you to read these passages for yourself that you may gain personal wisdom and knowledge. Let’s begin.
“Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious;”
Acts 17:22 NKJV
Our good friend Paul comes right out the gate taking to the church in Athens. “You are very religious!” That term may be heard by nonbelievers pointing to those claiming to be “Christians” as well. You may have been offended reading that.
Paul then continues and explains why. In verse 23 Paul has found an altar with the inscription “to the unknown God.” These people of Athens couldn’t even tell you who God was to them. They said the right things, did the right actions, yet still, they could not tell you the God they served.
But how does that apply to me? Like in our first article, Higher, serving God is more than a “yes” on Sunday and live my life every other day. It requires personal sacrifice. What you give up will be restored greater than was lost. As long as the intention of your heart is pure to loving the creator who made you. Who loves you.
“so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;”
Acts 17:27 NKJV
Paul takes the next couple of verses to express that very thought. “Grope” may sound like an awkward word or way to put this feeling. Let me spin it this way. Are you willing to give up your front row VIP passes to a concert of your favorite artist? Are you willing to give up your newest clothing for your best event? Are you willing to give money away without reward? Are you willing to give up something that is near and dear to you without the certainty of replenishment?
You’re probably going to cling onto those things for dear life. Because they mean a great deal to you. Now, what if I said there is a cure to your worst day? A do-over single fix it. Would you fight or grab onto that for dear life? Well, that cure is a person and His name is Jesus. We will fight for Jesus? Does that sound right? How about we will cling to Him.
We’ve already learned He is closer than we think. He is wanting to be our friend. Now He wants to be our everything? YES. YES. YES. He’s the man with a plan to get you out of your struggle. He’ll find a way to bring peace where there needs to be peace. He will bring justice where there needs to be justice. There will be joy in places that need to have new life.
“And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter. ”
Acts 17:32 NKJV
Paul continues in expressing the need to repent. To believe in the death of Christ, but the Truth that He has risen. As well as forming a relationship with Christ. “Some mocked.” That’s the truest statement. You will be mocked. There will be those that their sole purpose is to bring you down. They won’t believe what you have to say. But Paul is our example to keep on keeping on.
“However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.”
Acts 17:34 NKJV
“Some men joined him and believed.” You may not feel this connects with you. But it relates to you. Because someone said, “yes” to the Lord, you had an encounter. If you’ve never met the man named Jesus, He is waiting to meet you open arms.
Next week we are wrapping this up. We’re flying out the nest. We’ve gathered a lot of information. Now, what is it to apply it to our circumstances?
If you’ve found this enjoyable, please like, & share! If you’ve got a testimony of how these posts are transforming your life, we’d love to hear that too! Until next time, peace & blessings!!
