One Thing: Hillsong

You are more than a label, you’re His.

We continue this series in the pains we experience from the church. These aren’t all, but some I’ve encountered along the way. Let’s begin!

1. The Paper Cut: I Left The Church

This is a wound that happens quickly, without warning. It causes a sting when you remember it’s there. However, it is soon forgotten.

2. The Burn: Burn It Down

This wound comes in variations. Just like a medical burn you have different degrees & levels of pain. There has to be a healing process. It’s not always easy, & can take time.

3. The Heart Attack

4. The Stroke

Today’s reading will come from Ruth 3. So far we’ve learned about our players in this game. Ruth. Boaz. They are our main focus. This will be a quick summary, so I hope you really dive into reading for yourself what I can’t cover in our time together.

So Naomi, Ruth’s mother-in-law, asks of Ruth to go on a mission. If you remember Boaz had taken favor to Ruth. So Naomi tries to play matchmaker. Ruth was to enter the dead of night to lay at the feet of Boaz. With more direction from verse 3-4. Ruth being obedient did as told.

Have you ever done something for someone because they asked? Bet you have. Now is there a difference in who asks you? Someone close versus someone who you have hurt against. Maybe not even that. You just don’t know the person or just know the person a little.

We want to belong. We want to have a sense of purpose. For Ruth, she could no longer bring anything to Naomi except friendship, and kindness. If she bore a child it would be from the lineage of another. She, in a sense, lost her purpose.

This may sound confusing in comparison. However, have you ever had a title or role you played for a church, in your family, at home, or work? Then lost it. Or could no longer fulfill the role.

I can think of many in my life. Now imagine that title was ripped away. Regardless of reasoning. Your identity, a role that you took up and became your life. Would you believe there was a hurt there? That leads us to our next hurt.

The Heart Attack

A hurt that occurs when you lose a piece of yourself. Mainly because of the time and effort invested in the relationship. It will be a process to regain the healing. But healing does come.

It’s hard to say everyone who has this hurt goes through the same process or even the same healing time frame. These hurts are measured on their own scale. Unique in forgiveness, & acceptance. Even in the discovery of a future purpose.

“You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭56:8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭61:3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

You see we aren’t left alone. God cares about us. He’s watching, ready to move & turn it for our good. He wants to restore beyond what we can even think or imagine.

Boaz had an opportunity. Here a woman lying at his feet. There is an honorable and desirable temptation. But being of great valor choose to honor Ruth.

At that moment he restored to her dignity. He blessed her beyond measure. He sent her off with a promise. He sent her off in hopes of discovering a new purpose.

We too are given opportunities and redemptions. Our healing process cannot be compared to another. It’s a relational healing with whom we are, to who we wI’ll become. Then meeting Jesus in the middle and heal.

Next week we will wrap this all together. You may feel weak side. But there is a redeemer coming! So stay tuned.
