Reckless Love: Cory Asbury

Love pursues you when you don’t want to be found.

Here we are a new month, a new series! We’ve learned about “Facing the Furnace.” Now we get to talk about love. In the next couple of weeks I want to answer one of the most famous questions:

What’s love got to do with it?

Which also just happens to be the name of this series. It may seem cliche to talk about love during the Valentine month, but why not? The world has distorted a true love that the very word “love” is passed around like a hot basket of buttered rolls at Texas Roadhouse. So let’s get to it.

Merriam-Webster defines Reckless as:

Marked by lack of proper caution: careless of consequences

You may ask yourself how does this define love? Have you ever had or scene that picture perfect young love? Couples free of worries, disregard of rules, couples that are just simply in their own little world. Well, this is a love Christ has for YOU. As seen in Matthew 18: 10-14 titled, “the parable of the lost sheep.”

Some would say this man in the story was reckless. You have 100 sheep & one is lost. Simple, right? Leave that sheep. Anything else would be reckless. To leave 99 sheep for one. “No sir, not today. That’s my livelihood. It’s my comfort zone. I don’t want to risk myself to find just one lost sheep that who knows what may have happened.”

Can’t you just hear this man complain? Good thing that’s not how this story turns out. So what did he do?

“And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

This makes us scratch our head. Why? It’s more than a story. It’s an example. It’s a testimony to who Jesus is for you & me. While parables were stories in themselves, their meaning can be unfolded to so much more. Jesus is so crazy for you that His love boggles the mind of those who don’t know Him.

At one point in our lives, we live without Jesus. We essentially are the one out of 99 that is lost. Jesus loves you so much that He pursues you & that confuses the world. It’s not logical thinking. It is RECKLESS. Some have yet to be found. Jesus is still pursuing the one out of 99 until His return.

“For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:11‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

There may be some reading this for the first time, coming to know this information. A man named Jesus came to “find” me? YES! The final passage of this parable helps in answering why.

“Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:14‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Still confused? There is a God who saw you were lost. He sent His son to find you! Yes, YOU. Reading right now. That you don’t have to live a life alone. Not anymore. No more running. But to be recklessly loved, by someone who would go to the ends of the Earth for YOU. Every time. Always.

As we journey into new adventures in love, what happens when it just seems tough. “Did I do something wrong?” Come back next week as we discover more about the variety of love.
